Bury RUFC 73 v Crosby St. Mary's 0

Bury hosted Crosby St. Mary's in their first home league fixture of the season and ran out comfortable winners with a 73-0 victory.

The game started with Bury kicking-off to the opposition and after gaining possession with a penalty, opened the scoring through the reliable boot of Adam Heath.

From the restart, Bury made their intentions clear with a driving maul from the line out which Wayne Elloway was able to score his first try of the afternoon from. Heath converted with ease from directly under the sticks.

It wasn't long before Bury started to spread the ball wider, this resulted in two consecutive penalties which Bury chose to tap and run. The second with Ben Holland making the initial break and Ed Watkins reaping the benefits with a quick pick and go in the corner to score, again converted.

The first of Ben Shedwick's two tries for the afternoon came from a quick backs move involving scrum half, Karl Simpson; outside centre, Lawrence Shedwick and full back Dan Jones. Fast hands created a gap in the Crosby defence which allowed the inside centre to crash through and finish under the posts.

In an afternoon where the Bury pack dominated the set piece in all facets of the game, the next try for Ben Holland epitomised the forwards work rate. From a catch and drive at the line out, Bury mauled their way towards the try line with Holland peeling off the back and brushing off the attempted tackles to score.

In an almost identical move, Wayne Elloway was to score his second of the afternoon. With a pinpoint accurate throw from hooker Declan Tyrone-Hampson, the maul was set and marched its way over the visitors line for the ball to be grounded.

Soon after the kick-off, the home side were quick to establish a solid base inside the Crosby half. The opposition were to soon buckle under the pressure once again and from a quick burst from Watkins into two defenders, the offload was able to find captain for the day, prop forward Andy Townsend who stormed forward and swan-dived over the line.

As the second half got underway, the game was to continue in the same vein. As South African back row forward, Chris Potts secured the Crosby kick-off he was able to feed the rampaging Ian Marshall who ran onto the ball and through three tackles before passing the ball to Sam Ware to continue the scoring.

With the tries coming thick and fast, the final try of note, came from another well worked set piece. With the ball moved strategically from a set maul and controlled masterfully by returning club captain Jonny Allen; this led to man of the match, Wayne Elloway, being able to muscle his way over the line and complete his hat-trick of the afternoon.

A productive afternoon saw Bury pick up another bonus pick up another bonus point victory and sees them top the table at this early stage of the season. Bury next travel to Eagle next Saturday for a 3pm kick-off, hoping to maintain their momentum in what will pose a tougher challenge.
