Positives taken from Cup defeat

Round 4 of the Blacksticks welcomed West Park to Bury with the game being switched from the Tundra like landscape of the main pitches to the slightly softer ice pack of Derby High to ensure the match could go ahead,(a commendable effort as most of the games in our pool were called off).
Firstly the lads of both sides must be congratulated on adapting to the conditions and producing a thoroughly entertaining and competitive game. Well done everyone.
The match itself saw a keenly contested first 15 minutes and although West Park had notched up a 12 point lead there was little to tell between the two teams. Unfortunately this was to turn as the Bury heads dropped and the fundamentals of rugby went out of the window. Tackles were missed, passes were dropped and again we over committed at the rucks and mauls leaving acres of space for the well disciplined West Park lads to capitalise on. Half Time 28-0.
The second half saw some tremendous Bury defending although West Park’s try line was never in danger of being crossed. However with the next try going to West Park, the game was over as a contest,(the 30 point gap rule), with the final minutes of the game being used as a friendly.
Well done to West Park who deserved to win, and also well done to Bury. As a team we have undergone a number of personnel changes over a very short period of time, and I think the lads can all hold their heads high for giving it their best. Remember for this game we also had 2 of our more experienced scrummers missing – Gianni and Jordan and West Park are top of our pool!!
There were signs here that we are on the right track and if we achieve stability within our ranks and bring in a few new faces to give us some depth and provide competition for places, things WILL improve.
